Santiago Arau's Aerial Photography Project

Ten years ago, photographers were concerned that drones could replace their work; however, Santiago Arau decided to become interested in aerial photography and the technology it involved. Gradually, Arau began to build narratives through his photographs, telling stories from various photographic pieces.

His early incursions into aerial photography focused on capturing images of iconic places from a novel perspective, such as the Ángel de la Independencia in Mexico City. Arau's aerial photographs began to spread widely after the earthquake of 2017, attracting the attention of a new generation of photographers interested in exploring this technique.

Arau, who considers himself part of the last analog generation of professional photographers, highlights the importance of transgenerational conversation and showing pathways through his works. Despite having worked in advertising and television, Arau seeks to concentrate on his studio in New York to continue developing his art.

Born in 1980, the photographer has experienced the transition from analog to digital photographic processes, adopting new tools like drones in his work. While acknowledging the positive influence of digital technology on his career, Arau still values old photography and the visual narratives he can create from it.

Amid the revolution brought about by drones in aerial photography, Arau currently faces the challenge of executing his ideas rather than generating new proposals. Despite technological advances and the emergence of artificial intelligence, Arau reflects on the importance of reconnecting with the environment and stopping the present suffering instead of worrying about the future.

Facebook and Instagram have given visibility to his career, allowing him to consolidate as an independent photographer; however, his focus remains on conveying stories and connecting with people through his art. Arau is immersing himself in a photographic project centered on the mountains of Mexico City, seeking to explore and highlight the natural beauty that surrounds such a densely populated metropolis. Essentially, for Arau, his work goes beyond capturing images; it is a way to reflect and reconnect with himself and the environment around him.
